Properly Caring for Your Braces

If you have braces near Lombard, rest assured you’re on your way to a confident, healthy smile! Oakbrook Orthodontics understands there’s a big difference between caring for your teeth with and without braces. But if you put in some extra care while your braces are on, you’ll be thrilled with the results. Here’s what you should know about taking care of your braces the right way.

A Little Patience Goes a Long Way

Now that you have additional material in your mouth, the process of brushing and flossing will take a little more time and effort. Before you brush, make sure you take out any removable parts such as rubber bands. Swishing water before brushing is also a great way to loosen and get rid of any excess debris such as food chunks. If necessary, you may need to use an additional tool such as picks to access hard-to-reach places. We are happy to provide you with any additional tools you may need to ensure your teeth stay clean.

When you start brushing, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle at your gum line to make sure you can access all areas above and below the wire. Move your brush in a circular motion, taking the time to brush each tooth individually. Spend about 10 seconds on each tooth for best results. It may sound tedious, but we want everyone with braces near Lombard to have the healthiest mouth possible.

Floss & Fluoride

Taking the time to floss after you brush your teeth will pay off in the long run. While it may seem like a lot of work, the last thing you want to deal with when you get your braces off is a cavity. It’s best to use a flossing product that’s specifically designed for braces, such as floss threaders, proxybrushes or interdental picks. We will discuss the option that best suits you during your appointment. Taking 30 extra seconds to use fluoride is a great way to end your dental routine.
