What to Expect When Getting Braces

As orthodontists in Lombard, we are well-versed in everything braces-related. But we understand that getting braces at any age can be a daunting and scary process filled with a lot of unknowns. Don’t panic; it’s likely that the process won’t be as bad as you think. Plus, being confident in your smile is priceless. Here’s what to expect if you or your child is getting braces in the near future.

Pre-Procedure

First and foremost, pick what kind of braces will work the best for you. Different types will affect your teeth in different ways, so doing research and consulting with our orthodontists in Lombard is a key step. The most typical type of braces are brackets that bond to the front of your teeth. Secondly, you can get brackets that bond to the back of your teeth. Finally, there are metal bands that wrap around your teeth.

The bands on your brackets will be changed out during your time with braces, so they’re a great way to add some personalization. Pick clear bands if you want to keep things less noticeable or pick a fun color.

Next, make sure your teeth are sufficiently cleaned on the day you get your braces on. This might mean scheduling a cleaning with your dentist a few days prior to getting your braces on. We need a clean surface, so we can properly cement the braces to your teeth. The cleaner your mouth, the quicker the process will be.

During the Procedure

Our Lombard orthodontists will patiently yet efficiently attach the brackets to each individual tooth with bonding glue. Then, we will place the wire and secure the brackets with a band color of your choice. Expect the process to take anywhere from 1-2 hours.

Post-Procedure

Your mouth will likely be very sore in the following days after getting your braces on. This is completely normal and can be combatted with ibuprofen and soft foods like bananas, oatmeal and soup. Make sure to brush and floss regularly after getting your braces, as it’s easier for food to get stuck in your teeth.

If you or your child has questions about the process of getting braces, feel free to contact our orthodontists in Lombard. We want to help you get the smile of your dreams!
